Jonathan Devaux

An antique legal document hand written on vellum and dated 1755, “the thirty second year of the reign of George the Second”. As was the custom at the time the date was recorded by reference to the reigning monarch. The document is handwritten in sepia ink, there are some losses to the script but the lettering is marked into the surface of the vellum. The scalloped top edge was created in this way when more than one copy existed so that subsequent matching up of the copies could authenticate them as having been created at the same time. Vellum was widely used for legal documents because of its durability. The document measures 487mm wide by 244mm deep, it will be shipped folded along it’s original crease lines.
