RARE Black Forest hand-carved bear umbrella stand, a fine example of 19th Swiss or German woodcarving craftsmanship from the Black Forest region.

Type:

Black Forest carved wood figural bear umbrella stand (can also be used as a cane or stick stand).
Depicts a standing bear holding a hoop, with an oval-shaped base reservoir for collecting water from wet umbrellas.

Hand-carved linden wood (limewood), richly stained and polished to highlight the depth of the fur texture.
The base includes a carved floral motif, typical of Black Forest decorative elements.
The metal cross-bar across the top of the bowl holds umbrellas upright.

Highly detailed fur texture, lifelike facial expression, and realistically posed limbs.
The bear’s mouth is open, showcasing carved teeth and tongue.
The base has four paw-feet, and the back is likely flat or slightly concave for wall placement.

Black Forest region (Schwarzwald), Germany/Switzerland
Circa 1880–1900
Black Forest carving became especially popular in Victorian Europe, where such whimsical and lifelike animal carvings were admired and exported extensively.
