Les Dogons vivent au Niger, le long des falaises de Bandiagara et à l’intérieur de la boucle du Moyen Niger. Peuple profondément mystique, l’art est omniprésent dans leur vie, portes, masques, décors, ustensiles, statues, l’art Dogon se caractérise par sa profusion et son ancienneté.


Les masques sont un des éléments de cette production artistiques, fabriqué à partir de bois léger et de fibres ils sont particulièrement fragiles. On en connait une grande variété de type différent, environ 80, représentant des femmes, des anciens, des jeunes, des sorciers, des personnages mythiques etc.… Ces masques polychromes sont toutefois très caractéristiques, le sommet du masques est souvent proéminant, ils ont une certaine ampleur. Ils sont dérivées de la « mère des masques » qui était préservé à l’écart et n’était utilisé que lors des célébrations de la grande fête du Sigri, une fois tous les 60 ans.
