A propos du photographe :

Ferdinando Scianna est né en Italie en 1943. Il a étudié la littérature, la philosophie et l’histoire de l’art à l’Université de Palerme. C’est à cette époque, dans les années 1960, qu’il a commencé à prendre des photographies, en se concentrant d’abord sur les habitants de la Sicile. En 1966, Scianna a remporté le Prix Nadar pour son livre Feste Religiose in Sicilia/Fêtes religieuses en Sicile, qui comprenait un essai de Leonardo Sciascia, l’un des nombreux écrivains célèbres avec lesquels Scianna a collaboré tout au long de sa carrière.

Scianna a commencé à travailler pour le magazine L’Europeo en 1967, d’abord en tant que photographe, avant de se lancer dans le journalisme. Il écrit également sur la politique pour Le Monde diplomatique et sur la littérature et la photographie pour La Quinzaine littéraire. Dans les années 1970, Scianna rencontre Henri Cartier-Bresson, qui lui demande de rejoindre Magnum. Scianna est devenu membre à part entière en 1989 et est maintenant un contributeur. Dans les années 1980, Dolce & Gabbana le choisit pour photographier leur campagne, qui lui vaut une renommée internationale. À la fin de la décennie, il publie un livre rétrospectif, Le forme del caos/The Form of Chaos (1989).

Les portraits de l’écrivain argentin Jorge Luis Borges par Scianna ont été publiés en 1999, et la même année, l’exposition Niños del Mundo a présenté des images d’enfants du monde entier de Scianna.

Il a publié plus de 80 livres, dont Viaggio a Lourdes (1995), Dormire forse sognare (1997) et Viaggio racconto memoria (2018). Dans Quelli di Bagheria (2002), il cherche à reconstituer l’atmosphère de sa jeunesse à travers des textes et des photographies de Bagheria, de sa ville natale en Sicile et des gens qui y vivent.
