An old Tuareg robe weight or assrou n' swoul
Niger, late 19th - early 20th century

A genuine assrou n' swoul, generally translated as " the key which is thrown over the shoulder ". 
This elaborate key-like pendant is often worn by wealthier women as a counterweight to keep their head-cloths or robes from being blown away by the Sahara's winds.

The key (or the assrou) is hand-made, using brass, copper, iron, silver and nickel alloy, and wood
The method of laminating used is known as the ‘sandwich technique’. This key is well balanced, neatly executed and engraved with fine Berber designs. The patina on the three wooden studs clearly indicates that this piece was well used and had a long history.

Length = 40.5 cm
Weight = 280 g

In good condition. Normal traces of age and use. The patina and dust that this object has collected over the decades somewhat hide the elaborate engravings and authentic colors. I have deliberately not polished this object to preserve its authenticity.
