【Product details】
A beautiful set of five lacquerware soup bowls with lids, crafted in the late 20th century by renowned Wajima artisans.
Wajima lacquerware is renowned for its exceptional durability and elegant finish, achieved through a meticulous process involving over 23 steps and more than 124 detailed stages. The result is lacquerware that is both robust and refined, reflecting the highest standards of Japanese craftsmanship.
These black lacquer bowls are adorned with pine, bamboo, and plum (shōchikubai) motifs rendered in delicate maki-e. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. In Japanese tradition, these motifs symbolise auspiciousness: pine represents longevity, bamboo symbolises resilience and growth, and plum signifies perseverance and renewal. Together they convey wishes for good fortune, prosperity, and health.
The interiors of the lids also bear subtle gold and red plum designs. All pieces are signed "Ito 伊藤" on the base (likely the name of a previous owner), and come with signed cloths and the original wooden storage box, which also bears the signature and seal of the artists.
There are minor blemishes and signs of age, but overall the set remains in good used condition. Please review all photos carefully for further details.
