Description from the seller
Govert Heikoop (1951–2007)
From Past to Present, 1988
Large architectural sculpture
Hand-painted wood
Hand-signed
An important large-scale autonomous sculpture by Dutch artist Govert Heikoop, executed in 1988, a key period in his artistic development. This work brings together Heikoop’s architectural approach, refined craftsmanship, and sophisticated use of colour and form.
Heikoop studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in the United States, where he was influenced by an interdisciplinary approach to art, design, and architecture. During this period, he also studied under Daniel Libeskind, whose emphasis on spatial tension, structure, and conceptual architecture can be felt in Heikoop’s layered compositions and precise construction. This architectural thinking remained central to his sculptural practice throughout his career.
The sculpture is meticulously executed in hand-painted wood. Continuous planes of colour, subtle tonal transitions, and the inclusion of a seemingly loose vertical element create a carefully balanced tension between stability and movement. Viewed up close, the level of finish and complexity makes it almost inconceivable that the work was entirely made by hand.
Stylistically, From Past to Present relates closely to the post-modern design language of the 1980s and shows clear affinities with the Memphis Group, particularly in its bold geometry, expressive colour fields, and rejection of strict modernist restraint. In this context, comparisons can be drawn to the work of Ettore Sottsass, whose Memphis designs similarly combined architectural rigor with playfulness and symbolic form. Heikoop’s work, however, remains distinctly sculptural and personal, operating between object, architecture, and autonomous art.
Alongside large-scale commissioned projects, Heikoop consistently produced autonomous works as a means of artistic research and renewal. According to artist and long-term partner Claire Begheyn, MFA, sculptures such as this allowed him to challenge himself continuously and became catalysts for further artistic exploration.
With its strong architectural presence and refined material execution, this sculpture functions as an autonomous statement piece, suitable for contemporary interiors, galleries, public spaces, or serious collections focused on post-modern sculpture and design.
