Jian ware tea bowls are among the most renowned tea vessels from the Song Dynasty, celebrated for their unique forms, glaze effects, and practical functionality. Produced in the Jian kilns of Jianyang, Fujian Province, these black-glazed bowls played a significant role in Song Dynasty tea culture and were highly favored by tea enthusiasts and literati. The bowls typically feature a dark brown or black glaze with intricate surface patterns, such as "hare’s fur," "oil spots," and the extremely rare "yohen" (曜變) effect, which exhibits iridescent, multicolored hues and is considered the pinnacle of Jian ware artistry.

The typical shape of a Jian bowl includes a wide mouth, sloping sides, and a small, circular foot, designed to facilitate the flow and visual appeal of tea. The dark glaze provides a striking contrast to the frothy, white foam created during the Song-era "whisking tea" technique, enhancing both the aesthetic and sensory experience. Additionally, the substantial weight and thickness of Jian ware bowls help retain the tea's temperature, making them a perfect blend of utility and beauty.
