Het beukenhout voor deze schaal komt van een reauachtige beuk die in de buurt van Nijmegen is geveld en een aantal jaren buiten heeft gelegen. Pas na jaren is het hout verzaagd tot schaaldelen en voro droging naar binnen gebracht. Als gevolg hiervan is het hout aangedaan door schimmels die voor de verkleuring en typische tekening van het hout zorgen.

De schaal is afgewerkt met een finish op basis van plantaardige olieën en harsen waaronder lijnzaadolie, pijnboomolie, rozemarijnolie en was. De olie is vrij van middelen als lood, kobalt, mangaan of zirkonium. De olie is aanvankelijk heel vloeibaar en dringt daardoor goed in de houtvezel door. Na uitharding biedt de olie een goede bescherming tegen indringing van vocht en vuil.
