Panneau sculpté représentant la déesse Lakshmi (Sri Devi)

Ce panneau en bois représente Lakshmi, déesse de la beauté, de la fortune et de l’abondance, épouse du dieu Vishnu. Debout dans une posture frontale, la déesse tient dans sa main droite un bouton de lotus encore fermé, symbole de pureté et de fécondité spirituelle. Ce geste exprime l’éveil latent, la promesse de prospérité et la continuité du cycle de vie. Sa main gauche repose le long du corps dans une attitude de calme bienveillant.

Lakshmi est représentée selon les canons de l’art dravidien, visage plein aux traits stylisés, lourdes boucles d’oreilles, poitrine haute et ornements abondants soulignant son caractère à la fois divin et féminin. Sa ceinture perlée, ses parures détaillées et la gestuelle hiératique rappellent les sculptures architecturales des temples du Tamil Nadu et du Karnataka.

Ce panneau faisait probablement partie d’un élément architectural, pilier, linteau ou encadrement de porte d’un sanctuaire dédié à Vishnu, où Lakshmi apparaît comme dispensatrice de prospérité et de bénédiction.

La surface du bois, aujourd’hui patinée et légèrement noircie par le temps, est érodé par endroit. Le modelé des volumes et la précision du travail témoignent d’un haut niveau d’artisanat dans la tradition des ateliers méridionaux.

État de conservation : usures, fentes et manques anciens, belle patine d’âge.
