Cette statue africaine Jonyeleniw Bambara est liée à une société initiatique Bamana. 

Auparavant l'ethnographie n'y faisait que de rares allusions. Avant les enquêtes de terrain, on prêtait aux figures du Jo des significations plus ou moins fantaisistes en les renvoyant de manière un peu forcée à un mythe cosmogonique ou en les qualifiant de reine.
Ces statues ne se référent ni à des personnes, ni à des figures symboliques personnalisées, mais plutôt à des idéaux ou des valeurs.
