Oblong folio (21.8 x 13.6 cm). with two text leaves and 28 colourful, chromolithographed plates in the publisher's red, pebbled cloth with gilt title on the front board, and with printed and pictorial endpapers.
This very rare book contains 28 beautiful chromolithographed plates depicting edible fruits - including pears, apples, plums, peaches, and various berries - and ornamental plants such as trees, climbing plants, and rose bushes, along with four pages of text and black-and-white photographs of the Brown Brothers nursery in New York. The text pages are discoloured and show some creases, small tears, and an old repair; one plate has small crease and tear in the top margin, a few others have the captions a bit thumbed, and as you can see on the pictures, some plates are shaved with slight loss of some plant detsils (this is usually the case with this book). Otherwise, all the finely colour plates (printed on much higher-quality paper) are clean and fresh, with vivid colours.
