Description from the seller
Ritual Mask - Timor Island, Indonesia
Private Belgian collection – Collected during scientific missions, circa 1960–1970
This remarkable wooden mask, from Timor Island, stands out for its powerful sculptural presence and expression of rare intensity. A testament to the ritual traditions of the Austronesian populations of Timor, it combines an archaic aesthetic with a strong symbolic charge.
The face, broadly proportioned, is built around a massive relief nose and full cheeks that reinforce its monumental character. The narrow, deeply hollowed eyes give the mask a piercing expression, while the slightly open mouth reveals teeth inlaid with white teeth, highlighted by two prominent fangs evoking the power of ancestral spirits or protective beings.
The whole is enriched with multiple details attesting to its ceremonial use: metallic inlays on the forehead, scarifications engraved on the cheeks and chin, broad ear loops still preserved, as well as traces of the original headdress fixed to the top of the mask. These elements fully contributed to its ritual effectiveness and enhanced its visual impact during ceremonies.
The surface shows an exceptional patina of wear, deep and nuanced, the result of long handling, ritual fumigations and natural aging of the wood. The wear, ancient indigenous restorations and small damages visible testify to the object's life and its actual use within its original community.
According to the provenance information, this mask was collected during scientific missions in Timor in the 1960s–1970s, before joining an important private Belgian collection, provenance that enhances its historical and documentary interest.
Through its expressiveness, the richness of its preserved details and its solid provenance, this work constitutes a prized piece for connoisseurs of tribal art from the Indonesian archipelago and collectors of ritual masks from Southeast Asia.
Culture: Timor (regional attribution)
Country: Indonesia – Timor Island
Material: Carved wood, metallic inlays and attached elements
Function: Ritual ceremonial mask
Period: First half of the 20th century (probable)
Provenance: Collected during scientific missions around 1960–1970; former private Belgian collection.
This piece appeals with its authenticity, strong sculptural personality and condition, still preserving several of its original components, today rarely seen on older Timorese masks.
