Capriccio con rovine e personaggi is an 18th-century oil painting from Italy depicting architecture with ruins and characters, measuring 116 by 86 cm (canvas 99 by 70 cm) and unsigned.
Description from the seller
Important antique painting from private collection.
Capriccio with ruins and characters of the early 19th century
measurement: 116x86.5cm in a contemporary frame.
Canvas: 99 × 70 cm
Architecture
In the center and to the left, imposing ruined Corinthian columns can be seen, remnants of an ancient temple or classical building. At the top, part of a broken architrave remains, with an inscription in Latin characters. In the background, a large, also ruined arch opens, framing a blue sky with light, fluffy clouds.
Sculpture
On the right stands a large marble statue of a naked man holding a child, a typical allegory or mythological figure, placed on a stone pedestal.
Fountain
At the bottom left, from a carved lion's head, a jet of water gushes out, feeding a basin.
Characters
In the foreground, there are four figures in 18th-century costumes: two men sitting on a rock, engaged in conversation with a woman dressed in a long, colorful skirt; a fourth figure, standing, appears to be pointing upward or telling a story, with a theatrical gesture.
Atmosphere
The work combines the charm of ancient ruins with the vibrancy of everyday life: it is a meeting between the glorious Roman past and the seventeenth-century modernity.
The contrast between the monumentality of the ruins and the vividness of the characters creates a scenographic effect, almost theatrical.
Style:
The use of bright colors (azure, ochre, greens), small figures compared to the architecture, and the attention to the play of light and shadow evoke painters like Giovanni Paolo Panini or artists from his circle, who loved to paint imaginary landscapes with ancient ruins and elegant characters.
From a private collection - of great visual impact and excellent quality
With certificate of authenticity in accordance with the law
Professional packaging
Condition report: opera in good conservation condition / signs of aging on the frame
The frame shown in the photo is considered a gift attached to the artwork. It will be provided with the painting free of charge. No claims regarding the frame or complaints about potential transport damages related to the frame will be accepted.
