Pierre Abattucci (1871-1942)
Pierre-Jean Abattucci, born in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean on May 20, 1871 and died in Ixelles on December 20, 1942, was a Belgian landscape painter, neo-impressionist, etcher and lithographer associated with Symbolism.
Landscape (1921)
Biography
Pierre Abattucci was born on May 20, 1871, in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean[1],[2]. He is the son of Jacques Abattucci[3], a confectioner in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, and his wife Pétronille Senders. He married in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean[4] in 1902 Catherine Louise De Mesmaeker (1885 - 1956)[5].
The name is generally written Abattucci, with two t's, but sometimes you also find the spelling Abatucci with only one t. His birth certificate is written with only one b and two t's.
He pursued his artistic studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and then from 1892 to 1897 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he was a pupil of Jean-François Portaels and Joseph Stallaert. He was subsequently appointed drawing professor at the École des Arts Décoratifs, the very place where he had begun his artistic career, and then undertook a long trip to Italy[6].
Pierre Abattucci began his career as an artist at a Salon of the Circle L'Art Libre, and throughout his life he regularly exhibited at the Brussels Salons of the Royal Society of Fine Arts and of the Artistic and Literary Circle.
He held solo exhibitions at the Cercle, which was located in Vauxhall (Brussels), rue de la Loi, in 1921 and 1935. In 1912 he was already exhibiting there in collaboration with Emile Jacques. In 1924 he exhibited there jointly with Eric Wansart, Pros De Wit, Jenny Montigny and Henriette Bosché. In 1920 he exhibited at the Salon d'automne with, notably, Firmin Baes, Henri Binard, Louis Buisseret, Hubert Glansdorff and Gustave Max Stevens.
He was well regarded by critics, notably by Sander Pierron, who, in 1912, dedicated to him a laudatory article published in the Belgian newspaper L'Indépendance belge, also listing the titles of his finest achievements [7].
He died in Ixelles in 1942, and he rests[8] beside his wife, in the Ixelles Cemetery.
Œuvres
Besides portraits, Pierre Abattucci favored landscapes and the picturesque corners of old towns. His landscapes often appear idealized and dreamy. He pays particular attention to capturing the distinctive atmospheres of dawn and sunset. Abattucci also enjoyed landscapes of Venice and Saint-Raphaël.
The work is dated 1897 and signed at the bottom right.
