The Nō Hannya mask is carved from light wood and finished in urushi lacquer, measures 25 cm high by 20 cm wide, is from Japan and dated to the Taisho–Showa period, with a signed mei and its original box by Hashimoto Jin’emon.
Description from the seller
This Nō Hannya mask is carved from lightweight wood (likely hinoki) and finished in urushi lacquer, showing clearly high-grade craftsmanship. The demonic female expression—long red-lacquered horns, tense features, gold-lacquered teeth and ivory-toned surface—reflects the classical Hannya iconography. The interior displays beautifully aged urushi with natural craquelure.
The mask bears an internal red lacquer seal and a carved mei, matching the signature on its original wooden storage box. Both mask and box were made by the same craftsman:
越後國南蒲原郡
三条住 橋本甚右衛門 作
“Hashimoto Jin’emon of Sanjō, Minamikambara district, Echigo province.”
The piece fits the production of a professional workshop, with excellent preservation: intact lacquers, authentic patina, and its complete signed original box.
A serious collector’s item with full coherence between mask, signature, and box.
