Through a wide synthesis of biblical, patristic, and exegetical sources, the author traces the life of Moses, from his childhood in Egypt to guiding the people of Israel toward the Promised Land.
The work is not limited to a mere paraphrase of the Old Testament. Hugo confronts the accounts of Holy Scripture with the comments of the Church Fathers, with Catholic interpreters, and with ancient authors in order to offer a developed history of Israel’s legislator. The episodes of the sojourn in Egypt, the Exodus, the desert journey, the promulgation of the Law, and the religious organization of the Hebrew people are analyzed at length.
