Description from the seller
Reclining nude with a figure beside him, perhaps Steven Kwint himself with his muse.
The painting is in very good condition.
Steven Kwint (1931-1977) born in Elst and attended the art academy in Arnhem.
After his studies, he moves to Amsterdam and is admitted to the Rijksacademie.
He paints figuratively – among other works, he creates beautiful portraits of the famous jazz musician Ben Webster, with whom he is friends.
Gradually, his work becomes more abstract. New developments in art inspire Kwint. In the sixties, he was inspired by the artists of Cobra and by the expressive work of Chaïm Soutine, the French painter with Belarusian roots, to whom the American abstract expressionists also owe a debt.
Color is everything.
Whether Kwint works figuratively or abstractly, color is essential, all-encompassing. For him, a painting is a visual event in color. He has said about this: 'Color is the most fundamental. You are never without thought; you want to give it direction. I therefore prioritize color. I have often dreamed in color. Just dreams I can tell, that are completely in color.'
Kwint's work is among the collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Cobra Museum for Modern Art in Amstelveen. Unfortunately, Kwint died young. A few days before his 47th birthday, he passed away during a holiday in France.
