About the artist:
Sergio Larrain was born in 1931 in Santiago, Chile. He was immersed throughout his life in music, books, and painting thanks to his father, Sergio Larrain Garcia Moreno, a great art enthusiast and architect. He began photography in 1949 and, until 1953, studied forestry at the University of California at Berkeley. He then attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor before traveling across Europe and the Middle East. Thus, Larrain started his career as an independent photographer. He became the designated photographer for the Brazilian magazine O Cruzeiro, and in 1956, the Museum of Modern Art in New York purchased two of his photos.
In 1958, Larrain received a scholarship from the British Council, which allowed him to produce a series of photographs of London. That same year, Henri Cartier-Bresson discovered his photographs of street children and suggested he work for Magnum. Larrain spent two years in Paris, working for international press outlets. He became an associate of Magnum in 1959 and a full member in 1961. He returned to Chile the same year when poet Pablo Neruda invited him to photograph his house.
In 1968, he met the Bolivian guru Óscar Ichazo and almost abandoned photography to devote himself to the study of Eastern culture and mysticism, adopting a lifestyle in accordance with his ideals. He dedicated himself to promoting yoga, writing, oil painting, and occasionally photography.
Sergio Larrain continued to live and work in Chile until his death, in the mountain town of Ovalle, in the north of the country, on February 7, 2012.
