Description from the seller
Made in Europe (Ratto d’Europa) – Francesco Podesti / Slasky
In the contemporary reinterpretation of the famous Ratto d’Europa, Slasky replaces the pristine bull of Jupiter with a blow-up cow with disproportionate udders and a visible inflation valve. The operation is not only parodic but also acts as an X-ray of the myth and its persistently distorted presence in the European imagination.
In Ovid, Jupiter's metamorphosis is the ultimate act of divine power; here, transformation becomes an act of consumption, reversible, fragile, temporary. The inflatable object — a symbol of serial production, mass tourism, and the 'pop' rhetoric of the continent — replaces mythological flesh with synthetic plastic and compressed air.
Made in Europe – Inflate Responsibly introduces a meta-economic and identity-related comment: contemporary Europe is no longer kidnapped, but self-inflated, prisoner of its productive myth and the illusion of infinite expansion.
The scene remains suspended between the grotesque and the sublime: the cupids continue to shoot arrows, but they hit a PVC mannequin; the princess maintains her elegant gesture, but her steed is a toy, a advertising fetish of consumer society.
Slasky, in many of its iconic rewrites, does not destroy the classic myth — it literally empties it of air. What remains is a shiny, inflatable, and transparent surface: the thin skin of contemporary Europe, fragile and constantly at risk of deflating.
