This beautiful ukiyo-e woodblock print was created by Edo-period Japanese ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai between the late 1820s and mid-1830s (c. 1827–1834). It is part of Hokusai’s celebrated Large Flower Series (大型花卉シリーズ) from his later career. In the 1960s, this work was reissued using traditional woodblock techniques, supervised by Tadao Takamizawa.

Centered on a cluster of irises (菖蒲), the composition features petals with intricate purple-brown and white marbling, paired with supple, vivid green foliage. A lifelike grasshopper is tucked among the leaves — the piece retains the refined charm of ukiyo-e’s flower-and-insect (花鳥草虫) genre, while showcasing Hokusai’s masterful eye for natural detail in his later years.

Due to age, the washi paper shows slight yellowing from oxidation, but the print remains in good overall condition.
