Founded in 1889, the Royal Wine Company of Northern Portugal, known colloquially as the "Royal Wine Company," caused considerable confusion between the two Royal Companies, the new and the Old Royal Port Wine Company, at the time of its creation. And it was through popular opinion and commercial slang that the Pombaline Royal Company, founded in 1756, began to be known as the "Old Royal Company" and to use this designation as a trademark.

Over the years, the century-old Real Vinícola, created under the auspices of the Marquis of Pombal, became a purely asset-based company and was acquired by the renowned Fladgate Partnership, owner of major Port wine brands such as Taylor's.
