A vintage 7-piece set of hand-blown glass fishing floats from northern Japan (20th century), including two cylinder floats and five spherical floats in aqua, green, deep green, light amber and blue-green, all in good condition with signs of aging.
Description from the seller
A charming mixed set of 7 authentic Japanese hand-blown glass fishing floats, collected in northern Japan.
The lot includes two rare cylinder-type floats (rolling-pin style) and five spherical floats in various colours.
These floats were traditionally used by Japanese fishermen from the early to mid-20th century, particularly in the northern coastal regions such as Hokkaido and Tohoku.
Japan was one of the world’s earliest adopters of glass floats: production began in the early 1900s, replacing wooden and cork floats that were less durable and less buoyant.
By the 1930s–1960s, Japanese hand-blown floats had become widely used not only domestically but also across the Pacific, and many were exported or carried abroad through fishing networks.
Each float was individually mouth-blown, resulting in natural bubbles, tool marks, swirling textures, and slight deformation—features that distinguish genuine working floats from modern reproductions.
Cylinder-type floats, included here, were typically used for longline or net stabilization and are today much rarer than common spherical examples.
