Oil painting on canvas depicting Moses causing water to flow from the rock of Meribah, a biblical episode taken from Exodus (17:1-7) and Numbers (20:1-13).
Measures:
126 x 169 cm
Description:
The scene shows Moses, in a commanding position, striking the rock with his staff, causing the miraculous water to flow and quench the thirst of the people of Israel. Around him, men, women, and children express wonder and relief. The composition is theatrical and crowded, with bright colors and sumptuous draperies.
Stylistic analysis
Large colorful, luminous, and bright screen, typical of late 16th-century Venetian tradition.
Elegant and idealized figures, mainly feminine.
The compositional structure and narration refer to the workshop of Paolo Veronese and, in particular, to his son Carletto Caliari.
