Description of the work
The painting depicts three men singing while reading from a large sheet of music.
In the foreground, a young man with his mouth wide open towards the sheet music. Behind him, an elderly bearded man wearing a cap who appears to be leading or supporting the singing.
At the bottom, a third character with a white collar, also singing with an open mouth.
Bottom left, on the table, there are a decorated majolica jug and bread, typical attributes of tavern convivial life.
The input is a dash character, which does not require translation.
Stylistic analysis
The scene belongs to popular and convivial genre painting widespread in the Netherlands and Flanders in the seventeenth century.
The subject and compositional setup closely resemble well-known works by Adriaen van Ostade, famous for scenes of peasants, musicians, and singers in rustic settings.
In particular, stringent comparisons can be made with paintings by Van Ostade and his workshop depicting groups of singers reading large sheet music.
The caricatured depiction of the faces, the warm light, and the focus on convivial objects (jug, bread) reinforce the attribution to the Ostadian realm.
Condition report: the opera is in fair condition with signs of aging and previous restorations — age spots and color fading (see photos). Conservative restoration is recommended.
Data on the importance of the work will be sent exclusively with secure packaging and insured shipping based on the estimated value.
