Description from the seller
小野寺梅丘 Onodera Baikyu (1889-1963)
Nanga artist. Born in Mie Prefecture. Studied painting under Aoki Baigaku, Yamamoto Baiso and Nishimura Goun. Skilled in flower-and-bird and landscape painting.
with signature and seal 'Baikyu' 梅丘
This elegant hanging scroll by Japanese painter Onodera Baikyu captures a tranquil spring night with poetic sensitivity. A full moon glows softly in the background, illuminating cascading cherry blossoms in bloom. Perched quietly on a branch, a sparrow gazes directly toward the viewer, inviting a moment of quiet reflection. In Japanese art, the full moon symbolizes harmony and transience, while weeping cherry blossoms evoke the fleeting beauty of life and seasonal renewal. The sparrow — a humble and familiar bird — traditionally represents domestic peace and resilience. Its direct gaze adds a subtle layer of intimacy, bridging the natural world and the human observer. Onodera Baikyu, active in the first half of the 20th century, was known for refined depictions of nature and seasonal motifs, often blending poetic atmosphere with traditional symbolism. This scroll is a fine example of his ability to convey serenity and depth through delicate brushwork. A protective storage box is included.
