Yamanaka Seiitsu (1822-1885) was a poet, politician and Confucian scholar of the late Edo period and the Meiji Restoration. Born in Mikawa. He studied under Shinozaki Kotake and Saito Setsudo. He excelled in poetry, prose, and calligraphy, as well as painting. He devoted himself to national affairs, associating with loyalists such as Yanagawa Seigan, Yori Mikisaburo, and Umeda Unpin. Around this time, he met Tomioka Tessai, who became his lifelong friend. During the Ansei Purge, he lost many of his comrades and, facing personal danger, fled to Shugakuin Village. After the Meiji Restoration, he served as governor of Ishinomaki Prefecture and Tome Prefecture, among other positions. After resigning from his official position, he retired to Arashiyama, Kyoto. He died in 1885 at the age of 63.
