Description from the seller
樵谷 Shokoku Japanese art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Rising Sun, Pine Tree, and Two Cranes
with signature and seal 'Shokoku' 樵谷
This elegant hanging scroll presents a serene and symbolic composition: a rising sun illuminating a solitary pine tree, with two cranes in flight below. The work is signed “Chikuden hitsu”, indicating that it was painted in the style of or in homage to Tanomura Chikuden (1777–1835) — a revered master of the Nanga (Southern School) tradition. The artist Shokoku (樵谷) respectfully emulates Chikuden’s poetic brushwork and literati spirit. The rising sun symbolizes renewal and vitality, while the pine tree represents longevity and steadfastness. Cranes, often associated with peace and auspiciousness, complete the scene with grace and movement. Together, these elements form a harmonious tableau rooted in classical East Asian symbolism.
Though the scroll does not include a storage box (tomobako), it retains strong aesthetic and cultural presence. The composition reflects not only technical skill but also a deep reverence for Chikuden’s legacy — making it a meaningful piece for collectors of literati painting and symbolic landscapes.
