Yuval Shaul (Israel, 1961) is one of the most prominent artists in the Israeli scene, especially recognized in Tel Aviv, where he has developed a body of work exploring themes of war, memory, and culture, sublimated by instinct. His work is characterized by a post-Nietzschean reading that bridges masculinity and the rise of silence. According to Shaul, discourse always arises from the original silence, and the only way to access that active silence is through a 'poetic deviation' from the now, disarmed of technique.
In his works, this clash of action materializes, touching the skin and penetrating materials, leading instinct back into the battle it seemed to have forgotten to fight. Silence, in this context, becomes the space from which the power of the verb can be reached. His exploration of these themes has been a central component of his career, which is not limited to painting but also encompasses sculpture and other media.
Shaul is an artist who has managed to evolve over the decades. After dedicating nearly two decades to sculpture, he returned to painting in his most recent project titled *New Abstract*. Shaul presents abstract, colorful paintings that interact with each other, creating dynamic compositions that seem to come to life. The artist's working process is similar to that of an alchemist: he uses oil paints mixed with industrial metallic paints, solvents, and other materials. His technique involves lifting papers in different directions and supporting them on various surfaces, allowing the colors to blend, drip, slide, and ultimately settle into a unique composition.
This process, which Shaul calls 'painting in action / in movement,' highlights his individual style and experimental approach to art. The interaction between materials, movement, and spontaneity is fundamental to his work, where each piece is a manifestation of the creative process itself. Through this practice, Shaul seeks to connect with something deeper and primal, a space where instinct and art meet, and where silence gives way to voice.
After developing figurative themes related to war conflict and memory in early works, the Israeli artist Yuval Shaul has recently shifted towards a more abstract style, as seen in this textured composition and telluric echoes. His aim is not merely decorative but continues to explore existential issues from a different perspective. Shaul acts as an alchemist, using oil mixed with other techniques on metal, paper, or wood, employing diluents and extra-pictorial materials to create dynamic effects and textures. The layers, drippings, and color fields interact to form a painting that is in action or performative.
Yuval Shaul lives and works in Tel Aviv, Israel. He trained at the Avni Institute for Art Studies in his hometown and at Zvi Millstein Studio in Paris. Selected solo exhibitions: 2019 Gal Gaon Gallery, TLV 2018 Christine Parker Gallery, NYC 2015 Beijing 3 Gallery, Beijing 2014 Lebenson Gallery, Paris 2013 Yves Saint Laurent Fondation, Paris; Pierre Bergé & Associés, Paris 2010 Lebinson Gallery, Paris 2009 Tavi Dresdner Gallery, Tel Aviv 2008 Tavi Dresdner Gallery, Tel Aviv 2004 Minoriten-Galerie, Graz 2002 Herzliya Museum of Art, Herzliya 2001 Gulman Gallery, Moscow 2000 July M.
