Description from the seller
根本雪篷 Nemoto Seppo (b1878)
Born in Ichihara, Chiba in 1878. His father was the Japanese painter Nemoto Shoukoku. He first studied under Yanai Baishu and later under Araki Kanpo. From 1895, he won many prizes at the Exhibition of the Japan Art Association. He specialised in flower-and-bird paintings, especially peacocks.

This elegant Japanese hanging scroll features a Java sparrow (buncho) perched among blooming red plum blossoms, a classic spring motif in traditional kachōga (flower-and-bird painting). The sparrow’s delicate form and the vibrant plum blossoms evoke a sense of purity, seasonal renewal, and poetic charm. The artist, Nemoto Seppō (1878–?), was a student of Araki Kampō and exhibited widely in the Meiji and Taishō periods. Known for his refined depictions of birds and flowers, Seppō’s works combine naturalistic detail with lyrical composition, making them ideal for tea rooms and seasonal interiors. In Japanese symbolism, plum blossoms represent resilience and elegance, blooming in late winter as a harbinger of spring. The Java sparrow, a beloved companion bird since the Edo period, adds a touch of domestic warmth and innocence.
