This refined Japanese hanging scroll depicts Jurōjin, the deity of longevity, accompanied by a white deer, a traditional symbol of spiritual vitality and auspiciousness. Jurōjin is one of the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin) and is believed to be the incarnation of the Southern Star (Canopus), which governs human lifespan. The deer, said to live for a thousand years, enhances the theme of eternal life and natural harmony. Together, they represent peaceful aging, wisdom, and the blessings of nature, making this scroll ideal for display in tea rooms, seasonal interiors, or as a celebratory gift. Although the artist is unknown, the brushwork demonstrates remarkable skill and sensitivity, capturing the serene expression of the sage and the gentle posture of the deer with elegance.
