Description from the seller
沈南蘋 Shin Nanbin / Shen Quan (b1682)
A Chinese painter of the Qing dynasty, he lived in Nagasaki for less than two years in 1731 (Kyoho 16), where he introduced the techniques of flower-and-bird painting in a sketchy style. His disciples, including Kumashiro Yuhi, formed the Nanbin school. He had a great influence on Maruyama Okyo, Ito Jakuchu, and other painters of the mid-Edo period.
with signature 'Nanbin' 南蘋 and seal 'Shinsen no in' 沈銓之印 'Nanbin' 南蘋
An elegant hanging scroll painting by Shen Nanpin (沈南蘋, active mid-18th century), renowned for his refined bird-and-flower compositions that bridged Chinese naturalism and Japanese Edo-period aesthetics. This work, titled Little Bird, Red and White Peonies, exemplifies Nanpin’s mastery of botanical rendering and delicate brushwork. The composition features a small bird perched among blooming peonies—symbols of prosperity, beauty, and seasonal renewal. The flowers are painted with remarkable precision and tonal depth, capturing both botanical accuracy and poetic elegance. The warm background and balanced layout reflect the influence of Ming academic painting, while the expressive bird adds liveliness to the scene. The scroll bears Nanpin’s signature (南蘋) and two seals: "Shinsen no in" 沈銓之印 and "Nanpin" 南蘋, confirming authorship and studio provenance. The scroll is presented without a storage box, allowing direct appreciation of its aged surface and mounting. A culturally significant and visually exquisite artifact for collectors of Chinese painting, Edo-period Sino-Japanese exchange, and classical bird-and-flower art.
