The first pipe, a 19th-century oil painting from the Netherlands by David van der Kellen, hand-signed, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
In this lively scene, everything is happening at once. In the center, men are smoking their pipes and toasting, while the surroundings suggest that the scene is set in a wartime situation.
The work was created by David van der Kellen, who comes from an artistic family of stamp engravers and medalists employed at the Rijksmunt in Utrecht. However, van der Kellen chose to pursue painting. He studied at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and the art academy in Düsseldorf and became a member of the artists' society Arti et Amicitiae. He was known for his romantic genre scenes and atmospheric interiors. Later, from 1876 to 1895, he served as the director of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
