Granvelle and the witch, a 19th‑century oil painting from Belgium by Jan van Beers, depicting a historical scene, with dimensions 140 x 201 cm (146 x 207 cm including the frame), sold with frame.
Description from the seller
This impressive work was created by the Belgian artist Jan van Beers (Lier, March 27, 1852 – Fay-aux-Loges, November 17, 1927). In the 1870s, the flamboyant Van Beers moved to Paris, determined to conquer the epicenter of modern art. During this period, he produced various monumental historical scenes, of which this painting is a beautiful example.
At work, we see Cardinal Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (Besançon, August 20, 1517 – Madrid, September 21, 1586), an influential statesman in the service of the Habsburgs. Originating from Franche-Comté, a part of the Burgundian inheritance under Emperor Charles V and later his son Philip II, Granvelle was known for his tough and unwavering political stance. He believed that the restless regions needed to be dealt with firmly. In this depiction, Granvelle comes into contact with an alleged 'witch.' The result is a very interesting work of museum quality.
