Being an Apple enthusiast, I have collected RARE and VALUABLE hardware and software for my co-sentimental Apple companions. The lucky Macintosh Apple enthusiast can supplement his/her collection with this legendary collector's item: the “Macintosh PLUS”. The model for the educational market was named "Macintosh Plus ED" (ED-ucation).

UNIQUE to this particular computer are “the engraved signatures” of the original Macintosh team - including the signature of “STEVE JOBS” - inside the CASE. The Macintosh team found the original Macintosh ART - and they saw themselves as ARTISTS. When you open “the case”, you understand why.

This is the third model in the Macintosh line, introduced January 16, 1986 - two years after the original Macintosh (1984) and one year after the Macintosh 512K. Price tag at the time was US $ 2599 (equivalent of $ 6,062 in 2020).

// AZERTY & FRENCH – Important Note for English-Speaking Buyers
The included keyboard is AZERTY and the startup floppy is French, but the applications on the disk are English.

Historically, the Macintosh keyboard layout was tied to the operating system:
– French users had an AZERTY keyboard French OS
– English users had a QWERTY keyboard English OS

Options for English-speaking buyers:
– Use the AZERTY keyboard as is — you can still operate the system normally. Typing letters is only affected when actively entering text; otherwise, the system functions perfectly.
– Upgrade with a non-working Plus keyboard (available from vintage hardware suppliers) — you can replace the mechanical keys to create a functional QWERTY keyboard.
– Acquire a full QWERTY keyboard — the most expensive solution, but gives authentic typing experience.

I am a Mac user from way back in the Legacy Era. I offer Vintage Apple computers as I would buy them myself. My admiration for Steve Jobs' legacy is so great that I want the Macs I sell, to stand "the test of time". Furthermore I only sell items I have "passion" for.

Hardware-wise, all my sold computers are completely disassembled, cleaned – and, if necessary, repaired – in order to extend their lifespan. See pictures.

// ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST & BATTERY ACID

– DUST: the inside of a 30-year-old computer looks the same as "the collection-container of a vacuum cleaner" (read: a dust bunny). And as you know "dust" can ruin your electronics;

– LEAKS: 30-year-old batteries will someday leak, causing irreversible damage to the computer. The battery is removed (FYI: online you can buy a new 4.5V battery for date/time settings. Please let me know if you need help finding the right battery, however a battery is not required to use this computer);

– REFURBISHED: the floppy drive is refurbished. This includes "floppy drive lubrication". Therefore the "internal floppy drive" works like a charm (formatting, reading and writing disks and of-course ejecting*). Usually the "EJECT* mechanism" fails. So the famous paperclip method is NOT needed for this Mac! Thus: SERVICED and totally functional floppy drive.

Long-Story Short. Computers from other vendors may look the same on the outside. I can guarantee you that the inside is very different! So if you want to enjoy your investment for as long as possible, choosing "wisely" is advisable.

// GERM-FREE "RARE" M0110A AZERTY KEYBOARD & M0100 MOUSE
The Macintosh comes with the accompanying keyboard and mouse. Those objects alone are already worth a fortune on auction websites. The keyboard (and mouse) are completely disassembled and cleaned professionally (see pictures).

In my opinion it is my responsibility (as a seller) to provide a Germ-Free keyboard (a 2018 study found that 96% of the keyboards were contaminated with bacteria). So, I think we can agree that nobody wants a nasty, infected keyboard.

FYI: the mouse is the so-called new-old stock (it's newly "Gray" compared to the other items).

// FREE SOFTWARE*

The French DD Floppy Disk includes the French operating custom (Système 6.0) and the (English) apps:

– MacWrite (version 4.5, April 4, 1985)

The (aforementioned) software was released along the first Apple Macintosh systems in 1984. "MacWrite" and "MacPaint" were two original "killer applications" that propelled the adoption and popularity of the Mac in particular.

Disclaimer:
The computer only includes software & games that is classified as "abandonware" ( from the Public Domain, distributed over the internet and available freely, easily and readily). The software is supplied "free of charge" as a free service (for the retro-computing fan). All floppies are digital copies of the original Plus 800 kb floppy disk.

FYI
I ALWAYS use brand-new-(800Kb)-floppies to copy "system & software". Therefore the color is subject to availability at the time of payment. Floppy color can be "blue, black or white".

// WHAT MAKES THIS VINTAGE MAC EVEN MORE SPECIAL?
The Macintosh Plus was the last classic Mac to feature a “telephone cord-like port” - on the front of the device - for the keyboard; as well as the “DE-9 connector” for the mouse (later models would use ADB ports). That makes this Apple Computer extremely RARE and EXCEPTIONAL … and therefore a good investment. FYI: The RARE keyboard and mouse, they alone are worth the bid (check other websites to have an idea of their prices)!

As an evolutionary improvement over the 512K, the PLUS came with 1MB RAM standard, and an external SCSI peripheral bus that launched the popularity of external SCSI devices for Macs (hard drives, tape drives, CD-ROM drives, printers, Zip drives, and even monitors).

// VINTAGE COMPUTER EXPECTATIONS

First-of-all. Please have realistic expectations when buying a vintage (retro) computer.


Expect minor signs of age on the keyboard and case, consistent with vintage equipment.
The red storage bag has some stains and needs cleaning.

As these are "vintage items", they are being sold as. Normal signs of use and wear. But as an experienced connoisseur I can guarantee that these items are in VERY GOOD condition (always keeping in mind their age). The numerous images are part of the meticulous description. Thus: judge yourself!



Be aware. All mechanical parts make more noice than you are use to, compared with modern equipment. But this is “normal” behavior. Obviously this is a 35 year old machine. The speed is therefore corresponding.


– In addition, the PLUS ED's that are typically sold have several cracks.
This specimen has no single crack in the plastic.
That's unique!


// IMPORTANT – A NOTE ON YELLOWED PLASTICS!

Some words on the yellowing.

 Old computer cases are made of ABS plastics which contain at that time "BROMINE". The element bromine reacts over the time of years with UV light and causes (not-even) "yellowing"*.

Take into account the fact that the plastic case shows "some stains" en "cosmetical imperfections" that are unfortunately difficult to capture. But they are there!


Please, if you find the aforementioned "stains" and "imperfections" a problem, it is recommended that you do NOT bid on this item. Again … the yellowed plastic* is not easy to capture on camera.

FYI/
Experienced collectors love the "aging-bromine-yellowing". You can compare it with "patina" on vintage furnitures. For connoisseurs it transforms the-surface-of-a-piece from the ordinary to the exceptional – and it tells a story … and brings on the appeal of objects that show their age openly. But again … it is important to know that this specific Mac has PATINA.
