【Product details】

This sculptural ceramic vessel by Jinnai Sakata embodies his experimental approach to contemporary Mashiko ware. Its bold, angular form and deeply carved surface — known as Shinjin-mon (Deep Pattern) — emphasise the physicality of clay and the expressive potential of hand-carved texture.

The vessel was fired using a high-temperature carbonisation process, producing the distinctive deep black tone characteristic of Sakata’s black pottery works. The outer surface bears rhythmic, wave-like carving that creates striking light and shadow contrasts, while the interior reveals a lustrous black finish that enhances its sculptural depth.

Balancing raw earthiness with refined geometry, this work reflects Sakata’s pursuit of form beyond functional ceramics, positioning it within the realm of contemporary ceramic art. It may also be used as a flower vessel for ikebana arrangements by adding a kenzan (metal pin holder).

Mashiko ware originated in the late Edo period in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture. Celebrated for its earthy texture, durability, and warm handmade character, it remains one of Japan’s most recognisable ceramic traditions.

Jinnai Sakata studied under Shoji Kamoda in 1964 and established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966. His creative activities span pottery, paper, glass, and lighting, and his works have been exhibited extensively in Japan and abroad.

Very good used condition with natural variations from the firing process. Please refer to the photos for details.
