Kees Bastiaans (1909–1986), Manikata- Malta, oil painting, signed, original edition, from the 1960s, 52 x 62 cm with frame, Netherlands origin, sold by Galerie.
Description from the seller
Kees Bastiaans (1909–1986) was a Dutch painter best known for his expressive, often religiously inspired work. Originating from Zeeland and working for a long time in Noord-Brabant, he developed a completely unique style characterized by powerful colors, distorted figures, and a direct, emotional visual language. His subjects ranged from biblical scenes and saints to village figures, landscapes, and portraits.
Bastiaans is often regarded as one of the expressionists within Dutch post-war art. His paintings show a strong connection to the Catholic countryside in which he lived, and sometimes hover on the border of mysticism and earthly humanity. Despite being self-taught, he managed to develop a recognizable, authentic voice that grants him a special place in Dutch art history.
In this work, Bastiaans presents a powerful, expressionist street scene dominated by vividly contrasting colors and bold, black-outlined shapes. The dark, winding road guides the eye deep into the painting, towards a row of schematically depicted, yellow-lit buildings beneath an indigo night sky. On the left stands a sober, gray-green house, while on the right, a wall glows in warm ochre and reddish tones.
The work has some craquelure. The yellow paint has faded somewhat, and a small damage spot is visible in the blue sky.
Dimensions of work with frame: 52 x 62 cm
Dimensions of the work without frame: 50 x 60 cm
