A pair of silk-mounted hanging scrolls from Japan titled “A Pair of Cranes with Pine and Bamboo” by Okabe Tosui (c.1780–1850), Mid Edo period, with signature Tōsui Aikei ga, in fair condition; overall 200 cm × 58.4 cm (78.74 in × 22.99 in), image area 110.7 cm × 44.5 cm, two items.
Description from the seller
“Shochikubai” is a traditional set of three auspicious plants in Japanese and Chinese culture.
Pine (Matsu): A symbol of longevity and immortality
Bamboo (Take): Represents resilience and integrity
Plum (Ume): Blooms in the harsh winter, symbolizing perseverance and hope
These three are also known as the “Three Friends of Winter” (Saikan Sanyū), and are commonly used in celebratory contexts and auspicious patterns.
Also, instead of depicting plum blossoms, it may be represented by the red crown on the crane’s head.

Biography
Okabe Tosui (c.1780–1850)
A domain painter who served the Tsuchiura domain in Hitachi Province,
which corresponds to present-day Tsuchiura City in Ibaraki Prefecture.
Born into a family of painters—his grandfather and father were also professional artists.
He studied under Kano Dohaku Aishin (1772–1821), the chief official painter of the Surugadai Kano school,
and was granted the name “Tosui Aikei” by his teacher.
