Description from the seller
岩上青稜 Iwakami Seiryō (1915–2005)
He was a Japanese painter renowned for his mastery of ink painting and his poetic landscapes. Born in Ibaraki Prefecture, he studied at the Kawabata Painting School and, after early training in classical styles, turned to ink painting as his true medium. His works are distinguished by subtle gradations of tone that create dreamlike scenes reflecting both nature and inner vision. In 1973 he received the Minister of Education Award, and in 1990 the Order of the Sacred Treasure. As president of the Japan Ink Painting Association, he also devoted himself to teaching, founding the Seiryō School “Josuikai.” His art remains admired for its refined technique and contemplative spirit, embodying the vitality of modern Japanese ink painting.
with signature and seal 'Seiryō' 青稜
A serene and atmospheric hanging scroll by Iwakami Seiryō (岩上青稜), a celebrated Japanese ink painter known for his poetic landscapes and mastery of tonal gradation. This work depicts a mist-shrouded mountain forest rendered in delicate layers of ink wash, evoking depth, silence, and spiritual stillness. Seiryō’s approach to landscape painting was rooted in classical traditions yet deeply personal—his compositions often reflect not the visible world, but the inner landscape of memory and contemplation. The subtle interplay of light and shadow in this piece exemplifies his refined technique and meditative vision. The scroll is preserved with its original double tomobako (artist-signed wooden storage box and outer protective case), along with a taimaki (outer wrapping roll), ensuring both provenance and archival care. A culturally rich and visually elegant work for collectors of Japanese ink painting, modern Nihonga, and contemplative landscape art.
