Description from the seller
園部逸堂 Sonobe Itsudō (active 1900-1930)
a Japanese painter active during the Taishō period (early 20th century), remembered as one of the notable regional artists of his time. His name appears in the Imperial Painting Ranking of 1916, where he was listed among the “distinguished local painters,” reflecting the recognition he received within the art world of that era. Although detailed records of his life and works are limited, his practice is thought to have been connected to literati traditions and the aesthetics of bird-and-flower painting, genres often associated with poetry and refined cultural circles. Itsudō’s presence in historical art registers highlights the role of regional artists in sustaining and enriching Japanese painting beyond the major metropolitan schools, and his work remains part of the broader heritage of early modern Japanese art.
with signature and Seal 'Itsudo' 逸堂
A tranquil winter landscape painted by Sonobe Itsudō (園部逸堂), a Japanese artist active in the early 20th century and recognized in the 1916 Imperial Painting Ranking as a distinguished regional painter. This hanging scroll depicts snow-laden pine trees surrounding a small traditional hall, evoking a quiet moment of seasonal stillness and architectural harmony. The composition reflects literati sensibilities, with soft brushwork and restrained color capturing the poetic atmosphere of winter. The snow gently falling over the trees and structure suggests both solitude and serenity, hallmarks of classical Japanese aesthetics. The scroll is accompanied by its original tomobako (artist-inscribed wooden storage box), ensuring provenance and preservation. A refined and culturally resonant piece for collectors of Japanese seasonal painting and early modern scroll art.
