Description from the seller
So much is happening in this piece that you can't stop looking at it. You see people playing, but also figures fighting and stealing. The raised chair immediately draws your attention and enhances the dynamic of the scene.
The work was created by David van der Kellen, who comes from an artistic family of stamp engravers and medalists employed at the Rijksmunt in Utrecht. However, van der Kellen chose to pursue painting. He studied at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam and the art academy in Düsseldorf and became a member of the artists' society Arti et Amicitiae. He was known for his romantic genre scenes and atmospheric interiors. Later, from 1876 to 1895, he served as the director of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
