Description from the seller
Pipe carved in the shape of a lion's head (meerschaum)
Antique pipe finely carved from meerschaum, depicting a highly expressive lion's head. Handcrafted, probably early/mid-20th century. The carving displays a high level of detail: textured mane, eyes, fangs, and muzzle modeled with precision.
The bowl displays the characteristic patina of meerschaum, with natural browning of the top due to use. The stem, made of an old synthetic material (probably dyed ambrolite/bakelite), is mounted on a classic tenon.
State
Good overall condition for its age.
Patina and natural coloration of the foam (normal and desired).
Browning of the top of the stove due to use.
Micro surface cracks visible at the back of the head (natural cracks in the foam).
Hose in good condition, some minor signs of use.
No structural cracks, no major accident.
Materials
Furnace: Natural carved seafoam
Hose: ambrolite / old synthetic material
Estimated period
c. 1930–1960
Provenance
