Description from the seller
Antique carved briar pipe (bearded man's head)
Antique figurative briar pipe – Saint-Claude (France)
Antique carved briar pipe, made in Saint-Claude (France), the historical capital of briar pipe making. The bowl represents the head of a bearded man, carved directly from a block of beautifully grained briar, in the style characteristic of artisanal productions from the first half/middle of the 20th century.
The marking “BRUYERE ST. CLAUDE” is clearly legible on the side of the stove, attesting to a traditional local manufacture.
The dark ebonite pipe has a patina consistent with its age.
Marking
Stove side: “BRUYERE ST. CLAUDE”
State
Good overall condition for an antique pipe.
Homogeneous and natural patina on the heather.
Minor wear and tear and small marks related to time.

The facial sculpture is well preserved.

Furnace: carved briar
Pipe: ebonite
Estimated period
c. 1930–1960
