This enchanting watercolor depicts a young girl gently holding a canary in her hands, symbolizing purity and fragility. The figure, immersed in soft, enveloping light, is rendered with a painterly sensitivity characteristic of Giacomo Favretto's artistic maturity. The Venetian artist demonstrates his mastery here in interpreting the female soul with elegance and introspection, combining the expressive intensity of the face with a refined chromatic harmony of greens, ochres, and browns.
Dating back to the years 1880-1885, the painting belongs to the period of Favretto's full emergence, when his painting combines Venetian realism with an intimate and sentimental lyricism. The grace of the pose and the delicacy of the brushwork reveal an attention to the psychology of the subject, a hallmark of Favretto's poetics.

Giacomo Favretto (1849-1887). Venice, charm and seduction. The Venetian Giacomo Favretto (1849-1887) is one of the most important masters of 19th-century Italian art, recognized for the quality of his painting, the originality of his path, and his connections with the work of other artists close to or contemporary with him. A true innovator of the Venetian school of the second half of the century, he revisited and updated the distinctive aspects of the great Venetian tradition – from Longhi to Tiepolo – which had been abandoned in the first half of the 19th century in favor of history painting and landscape. Favretto was a hugely successful painter in his brief, intense career. He died prematurely in 1887, leaving on his easel an unfinished piece, the modern Liston, which might have represented a possible Venetian interpretation of the more modern international trends: but the Venice Biennale would only be founded in 1895.
