This orin, approximately 17cm in diameter, is used on Buddhist altars and other sacred structures.
It comes with a base, cushion, and bell rod.
It produces a beautiful sound when struck.
It shows little signs of use and is in generally good condition.
It is used when reciting sutras, and is rung to signal the pitch and to synchronize the tone and rhythm. It is often rung before, during, and at the end of a sutra chant.
Zen Buddhism is a sect with a tradition of ascetic practice centered on meditation and zazen, and it is said that orin were used to signal the start and end of meditation and the duration of zazen. The sound signaling the start and end of chanting is important, and it played a central role in rituals at temples and places of ascetic practice.
