The Pietà is considered one of Michelangelo's masterpieces due to the dynamism and softness of the lines, the plastic rendering of the bodily forms, and the folds of the fabrics. The sculptural group depicts the Madonna holding her son, just taken down from the cross, on her lap. The Madonna supports her son while she looks downward, with her right hand under the child's arm. In Jesus's hands, the holes of the cross are perfectly visible. The work does not depict the pain of the Madonna or the torment of Christ's battered body; rather, both life and death, united, achieve divine perfection together. This explains the pyramidal structure that, from the broad base spiraling upward to the apex, leads to unity, in the Virgin's head. Michelangelo's point of view is always the same: a frontal view. The excessive folds of the cloak emphasize the refinement of the nude body. This wide drapery of the Madonna contrasts with Jesus's smooth body. The perfection of this and the resigned face of the Virgin express the surpassing of earthly features and the achievement of ideal beauty. The extreme youth of the mother, in relation to her son, was chosen by Michelangelo precisely to best represent her chastity. In the Pietà, there is no hedonism but rather the deeper sense of Neoplatonism and Florentine classicism: the idea is fully expressed, and the forms are therefore completely finished. The extreme polish of the marble surface gives an extraordinary mimetic effect, which Vasari compared to a miracle.
The hood is made of valuable gray Italian marbled resin. One of the curiosities of this work is that it is the only one bearing the signature of the Master, on the shoulder strap that supports the Mantle of the Virgin. This feature has been reproduced and engraved on the large silver band, which is also enhanced with the artist's birth and death dates. On the headpiece is housed a resin disc displaying the Marlen logo. The chisel-shaped clip is made of 925 silver, embedded with a bronze disc in which Marlen designers aimed to synthesize the perfect fusion of formal beauty and theological truth, characteristic of the piece. The body consists of a 925 silver band engraved in relief with the masterpiece, perhaps the highest of Michelangelo's career and known as the Pietà of St. Peter or the Vatican Pietà, but to everyone, "Michelangelo's Pietà."
