Description from the seller
Teun Gijssen (1910–2003) was a Dutch painter, born in Hansweert and later residing in Riel near Eindhoven. As a self-taught artist, he developed into an idiosyncratic creator with a large, versatile body of work. He lived simply and freely, often traveling within the country and abroad for inspiration and exhibitions.
Gijssen painted landscapes, figures, and religious themes, working in an expressive, sometimes almost abstract style. He used paint in a rough, material way — with a palette knife, fingers, or cloth instead of a brush — giving his work a powerful texture and emotional depth. His use of color was warm and earthy, and his style was intuitive and independent.
In this painting, Gijssen demonstrates his characteristic expressive brushwork: thick layers of oil paint applied in quick, energetic strokes, creating a powerful cityscape or harbor view. The turbulent sky, painted in vibrant shades of blue, gray, and white, contrasts with the compact architecture of buildings that stand out in red, yellow, and dark blue.
The work is a bit dirty.
This artwork comes from the collection of the Eindhoven Museum. As part of the transition to Museumpark Vonk, selected works are being disposed of so that the museum can fully focus on the history and identity of Eindhoven.
Dimensions with frame: 69 x 90 cm
Dimensions without frame: 59 x 78 cm
