Technical sheet
Author: Anonymous from the European school
Anemones in Ceramic Vase
Chronology: Early 20th century
Technique: Oil on panel
Measurements: 45 × 37 cm (without frame)
Marco: 63 × 53 cm. European antique frame, with a wide molding in ebony-tinted wood with visible grains, an inner gold edge, and solid craftsmanship with artisanal assembly.
Style: European floral Post-Impressionism.
Condition: Very good.
2. Compositional and iconographic description
The work features an exquisite bouquet of red, lilac, violet, and white anemones, arranged in a clear earthenware vase on a dark table that subtly reflects the falling light.
The brushstroke is pasty, vibrant, with impetuous accents reminiscent of Raoul Dufy's floral natures or the harmonic ranges used by Henri Fantin-Latour, albeit with a freer and more modern execution.
The falling petals in close-up introduce a delicate symbolism about the fragility of the moment, a recurring theme in early 20th-century floral painting. The background in ochre and greenish tones helps to highlight the chromatic vibrancy of the bouquet, creating a balance between serenity and pictorial energy.
3. Style, School, and Comparative Valuation
The work belongs to the European floral tradition of the first third of the 20th century, close to domestic post-impressionism cultivated by authors such as Jean Jové, Jean-Gabriel Domergue, or certain Scandinavian painters specializing in floral still lifes with loose brushwork.
Its strength lies in the material-chromatic quality of the oil painting, the refined study of lights, and the lyrical sensitivity of the overall composition.
In the current market, pieces with this stylistic profile — particularly when they retain original, well-crafted frames — maintain steady demand among collectors of classical floral paintings.
