Landscape
Very beautiful oil painting on panel from the 19th century featuring a romantic landscape. Exceptionally well-executed. From the circle of Schelfhout.
Andreas Schelfhout, together with Barend Cornelis Koekkoek and Bart van Hove, is among the most important painters of the Romantic School. He painted summer and winter landscapes, beach scenes, and some marine paintings.
Schelfhout won important prizes at exhibitions both domestically and internationally. During his lifetime, many museums and collectors purchased his paintings. For example, King Willem III was a great fan of the Hague painter.
Schelfhout's influence on the younger generation of painters has been unprecedentedly great. Moreover, he trained many students. Several of them later became well-known painters, such as Wijnand Nuijen, Johan Barthold Jongkind, Charles Leickert, Jan Willem van Borselen, Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn, Johannes Franciscus Hoppenbrouwers, and Margaretha Roosenboom.
