Gubbels is originally a Dutch company for tobacco pipes, founded in the 19th century in Roermond.
After the Second World War, from 1946 onwards, the company began producing its own briar pipes (briar wood) — prior to that, Gubbels imported pipes from France and England.
To facilitate international export, Gubbels acquired the trademark rights to Big Ben in 1956; since then, the pipes are usually sold under that name.
In 1972, the company received the title 'Royal' and was officially named: Royal Factory of Tobacco Pipes Elbert Gubbels & Zonen B.V.
